Social Media Technologies and Relationships
Social media seems to be taking over and the technologies and tools offered are endless. This week we are exploring some new tools including Google Maps, Edmodo, Fakebook, Symbaloo, and Webquests. It is so neat to see all the different tools offered and what you can do with them. While social media has a plethora of benefits, have you ever considered its downfalls? Do you think social media is interfering with your relationships?
Marissa Brown wrote an interesting article on the topic. She believes that social media sites have disrupted our micro, interpersonal levels within relationships. Do you agree?

Just did “liking” on a bunch of tweets & FB posts of my friends. Luckily?! I didn’t feel overwhelmed and any pressure like ‘have to show them my emotional support!!’
ReplyDeleteAnyway, I definitely agree social media has pros and cons at the same time. And I think the author pointed out some negative aspects of it well. It was not surprising to see the report by Divorce-Online, mentioning, ‘many divorce cases were because of “inappropriate FB messages to members of the opposite sex”’
Social media has their own unique ways of communication or interaction (e.g. Messages are archived, speakers often cannot imagine who would join their conversations, etc.), unlike the ones of f2f communication. And it bring us more chances to see the others’ conversations easily. But I am dubious we can say “social media” it self is interfering with the relationships in the flirting & cheating case...
Thanks for your feedback Jiyae!! I'm glad it didn't overwhelm you. That's right about social media's communication tools. It's not the same as face to face and so much can take place at the same time, sometimes without other people even knowing. I agree, it may not be "social media" that is interfering with the relationships, but it is social media that enables a different type of interaction and way of life for the user.
