Technology Kinks and Quirks

Today during our Webinar with guest speaker Barry Wellman, co-author of Networked, we experienced some technology kinks. We had some trouble at first with the sound and audio since we were set up on a few different computers to portray more of a classroom experience for our guest speaker, Barry. We also experienced some issues getting Barry connected and heard. Once we were all setup, it was a great interactive experience! It was really neat to meet some of my classmates in person, who I've been networking with for a little over 3 weeks now! Barry was able to talk to us more about his experiences and sections of the book. I particularly like the use of the chat so everyone's audio doesn't have to be on, that way no one is talking over one another, but we can all still participate and engage in the discussion. Overall, I believe it was a success but definitely a learning experience.

I learned that, although issues may arise, it's important to continue to have a positive attitude and do what you can to make do with your situation! If I have gained any non-EME6414 readers, I highly encourage you to check out Barry and Lee's book Networked!

  1. It was glad to see you at the f2f meeting! And thanks for your help when setting up the computers for the webinar. I also learned from the tech kinks and next time, it will be much better! Anyway it was fun when we showed him some responses to his lecture by raising hands & checking the small image of us on the screen at the same time. :) Hope we can have another meet up!

  2. Hi Jiyae! It was nice seeing you again as well. Yes it was definitely a learning experience and fun to interact in person with classmates who I've only been networking online with. I think it was a great experience, would love to have another meet up as well!

  3. I am glad you posted about the Webinar experience. I had a slightly different experience because I was not able to make the meeting in Tallahassee. I had to join the webinar from Miami. I wish I could have heard the audio from your room. I feel like I missed some things here and there and Barry seemed to be a little frustrated throughout the presentation.
Overall, I did learn from the experience. There was some new information he shared with us.

  4. There wasn't much audio from our room, we tried using "thumbs up" and raising hands as Jiyae mentioned to show him our responses since it was difficult to get everything working properly. I think Barry would've needed much more time to go through his entire presentation, but it was a good thing we had read and discussed the book the past few weeks. For the means of our online course I think it went well, although I was happy to meet face-to-face and put some names to faces finally. Overall I do believe it was a great experience and something I hope to do again soon!
